About Counterstream

The stories we tell shape how people understand the climate crisis — and what they believe can be done about it.

Mainstream media too often tells an incomplete story: one without agency, catastrophe is inevitable, disasters are isolated events, and the people living through environmental harm are reduced to victims or voices in someone else’s story.

Through our award-winning podcast, journalism, and storytelling events, we create counter-narratives that challenge those frames and shift whose knowledge, history, and vision for the future are seen as authoritative.

At Counterstream, covering the intersections of racial, environmental, and climate justice are the norm, not the exception.

We document how frontline communities organize, resist, strategize, and build power. Our approach starts with treating lived experience as essential forms of expertise, alongside science, history, and data. We interrogate the systems that enable climate and environmental injustice to continue and spotlight community-led solutions that build power and possibility.

"Your work is necessary and revolutionary."
